top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan says American troops will still be involved combat next year even as the U.S. officially shifts to a support role.

The U.S. and its NATO partners will move into a supporting role in 2013, with Afghan security forces taking the lead in fighting. But Gen. John Allen says that doesn’t mean U.S. forces won’t still see combat.

IRA Murderers Jailed

Two men have been jailed for life for the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll three years ago.

John Paul Wootton, 21, who was 17 at the time of the murder, will serve a minimum term of 14 years.

Former Sinn Fein councillor Brendan McConville, 40, will serve a minimum of 25 years.

Constable Stephen Carroll, 48, was shot dead in Craigavon in March 2009 after being lured to a call-out.

President Hamid Karzai has said he hopes the transition out of war in Afghanistan will mean his country is "no longer a burden" on the international community.

After talks with US President Barack Obama at a Nato summit in Chicago, Mr Karzai said Afghanistan is "looking forward to an end to this war".

Nato is planning to handover to Afghan security forces the lead in operations against the Taliban in 2013, before a complete departure of combat forces in 2014.

Suicide Bomber Attacks US Soldiers in Afghnaistan

A suicide bomber on foot attacked a group of American soldiers with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, apparently killing and wounding an unconfirmed number of them.

al-Qaeda kill 63 people

At least 63 people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack during a rehearsal for a military parade in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, officials say.

The assailant, who was reportedly wearing army uniform, blew himself up among a group of soldiers at al-Sabin Square, near the presidential palace.

An al-Qaeda source told the BBC one of its members had carried out the attack.

It was the deadliest incident in the capital since President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi took power in February.
